Interview w/ Canadian Beats (Audio)

Edmonton-based artist, Nuela Charles was nominated in the Adult Contemporary Album of the Year category for a 2018 JUNO Awards.

Cited by the U.K.’s Metro publication as “cocked, locked and ready to be shot onto the world stage with a soulful voice that may one day fill the Amy Winehouse-shaped holes in everyone’s hearts,”Charles has brought her distinct voice to various stages across North America.

The lead single “Crumbling Down” from her sophomore album The Grand Hustle, landed Charles a nod from pop culture staple FADER.com, and spread nationwide as it landed on the CBC Radio 2 Top 20 charts for seven weeks straight.   She has a brand new release out now entitled, “Do It Right“.

Shane Christopher Neal of Canadian Beats Media sat down to chat with Nuela about the Juno nomination, her soulful voice and brand new single.

Exclusive Premiere of "Do It Right" on SoulBounce.com

IMG_2084.JPG

Excerpt:

"Charles digs deep into her bag of "cinematic soul" for her new single. Produced and co-written by Rob Kleiner, who's worked with CeeLo GreenAndra Day and Sia, the pair creates a sassy song that could soundtrack a big Bob Fosse number. Over a foundation of bass, percussion, guitar and finger snaps, Nuela lays down the law for a potential suitor. She opens the track, singing, "You got me going, got me glowing / Hoping you're devoted / I get this feeling you've been scheming, stealing / Am I dreaming?" She's feeling him something serious, but she's no pushover. Charles challenges him on the chorus, taunting, "Don't play fair, don't play nice / If you're gonna do it, do it right," and gets him right together."

DJyYo3KVAAA3MJY.jpg-large.jpeg

It's been a whirlwind of a couple of months, but we are excited to announce that Nuela Charles took home the 2017 Western Canadian Music Award for Urban Artist of the Year.

Awards History

From 1995 to 1999, the music industry associations of Manitoba, Alberta, and Saskatchewan joined forces to stage a yearly independent music festival and conference known as the All Indie WeekendThe success of these events led the three music industry associations to form the Prairie Music Alliance Inc. (May1999), a federally incorporated not-for-profit organization, who would host Prairie Music Week until 2002.

In January 2003, the Prairie Music Alliance Inc. united with the music industry associations of British Colombia and the Yukon forming the Western Canadian Music Alliance Inc. (The Northwest Territories joined in 2009).

With the shared vision of developing the infrastructure of the independent music industry across western Canada, the Alliance continued the successful music festival and conference tradition with the Western Canadian Music Week (now BreakOut West), host of the Western Canadian Music Awards and Western Canadian Music Industry Awards. In 2017, BreakOut West celebrates its 15th year as an integral part of Canada’s music industry. (More here: https://breakoutwest.ca/about

Nuela Charles Top 10 Finalist in Allan Slaight's Juno Masterclass

Slaight Music and The JUNO Awards have teamed up to create the premier artist development program in Canada: The Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class.

The Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class program serves as a bridge between the two key pillars of CARAS/The JUNO Awards; music education through MusiCounts and the celebration and promotion of excellence through The JUNO Awards. This program fills the gap between them by providing the crucial tools to help new and emerging artists become “JUNO ready”.

"Coming For You" Winner in International Songwriting Competition

ISC and the judges awarded the song "Coming For You" an Honorable Mention in the AC (Adult Contemporary) category in the 2016 International Songwriting Competition (ISC). Although being selected an Honorable Mention does not garner any physical prizes, with over 16,000 entries from 137 countries, ISC still considers this as an ISC winner.  That's pretty amazing. Big thanks to Jasmine Denham and Ari Rhodes for helping write one of my favourite songs!! <3
