Distant Danger

Nuela Charles Music

Nuela Charles has been gracing the depths of the pop-soul plane of Canadian music since her debut album Aware in 2012 and second album The Grand Hustle in 2016. Her latest effort Distant Danger adds an appreciative R&B groove to the already soulful Charles. Distant Danger is like being driven on a night out in neon-lit alleys, cigarette smoke skies, in old Chevrolets.

With plenty of newly felt production and arrangements, lead single “Troublemaker” leads the charge with pops and punches. Sass, empowerment, and respect command attention. “Sugar” is evidence of the evolving Charles and her range, and always with tinges of posthumous Aretha Franklin. “Do It Right” will have any crowd bumpin’ and groovin’ and “Danger” adds to the aptly named album. While the album may be a step-up for Charles in terms of dynamic and production, Distant Danger falls as more than just an album with pop-structures exhausted already, but it serves as a stepping stone to Nuela Charles talent and future as a successful musician.

Music Video for DANGER Out Now

The video has a certain nostalgic, nineties Caspar The Friendly Ghost-Halloween Party feel to it; a classic fancy-dress party in a huge mansion. The director, Johl tells us; “The video for “Danger” was filmed at The Villa, Edmonton; a Tudor-style mansion built back in 1912. I wanted the premise of the video to be fun, playful, and rich in colour, and using The Villa as the setting worked really well in reflecting this, making for the ultimate fancy-dress party…”

Review: Breakout West Showcase 2018

Upon my return, I could sense there was something a bit different about the performance that was currently gyrating the brew pub - and I was right. Walking in right as Nuela Charles was in the midst of tearing it down, I was starstruck. A warm, full-bodied vocal range, a soulfully palable energy and a presence the world has not seen since the passing of Winehouse, Charles, was a soul-train on a rampage, flooding the space with her modern Motown sound.

New Single DANGER + Pre-Order for new EP DISTANT DANGER

Excited to announce the release of DANGER, the brand new single off of the upcoming DISTANT DANGER EP (October 19, 2018).

Danger’ serves as a ritzy return for her bold pop-soul fusion. The addictive panache-ridden tones of the single start from the outset – an éclat of guitars dart around the mix under Nuela’s silky notes, while a slinky strut of a pre-chorus simply screams “sass”; ‘be a little bit of rough if you let me, kind of tough if you get me (get me)’. - http://www.imposemagazine.com/bytes/new-music/nuela-charles-danger

TROUBLEMAKER Music Video Premieres on SoulBounce !

Canadian artist Nuela Charles is readying the release of a new EP following the success of her JUNO Award nominated collection The Grand Hustle. She gave us the first taste of her upcoming project earlier this year with the sassy number "Do It Right," and now she's back at it with the second single "Troublemaker" and an accompanying music video.

Production duo Towers are behind the boards on "Troublemaker," and they create an upbeat sound bed punctuated by horns, percussion and handclaps that falls right in line with Nuela's cinematic soul aesthetic. The instrumentation underscores her sweet yet potent vocal performance as she sings about a man who's nothing but trouble.  She's torn between her feelings for him and what she's hearing about him in these streets. Her good sense prevails as the song goes on, however, as she declares, "I've got a million reasons and I think you'll agree / That you're not the one for me," on the pre-chorus.

For the Johl-directed, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights-inspired visual, we see the troublemaker in question at a nightclub filled with gorgeous women. This smooth operator thinks he's hit the jackpot as he chats up a few of the stylish beauties, but he thought wrong and they're on to his game. Nuela and company let him know that the jig is up and check him in the middle of the club with a mini-concert and dance number.

Press play to watch Nuela and her girls show this joker who's running things in SoulBounce's exclusive world premiere of the "Troublemaker" music video. Nuela Charles' forthcoming EP is set for release in October.
